Adecco MVP BEFC vs Zion FC - Jorge Marenco

  • Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player vs Zion FC - Jorge Marenco

BEFC got back to winning ways with a dominant display against familiar foe and D2 runner up Zion FC. Carrying over a similar line up from their previous victory BEFC got to show their groove and mark the difference between division 1 and division 2 competition. This was an important match to prove where BEFC belonged and indicate who could be dropping back down at the end of the season.

The performance was strong across the board with Zion never once forcing a save from keeper Sei Katase. BEFC in the first half really began to  concentrate on moving the ball and showed spurts of improved link-up play in the newly adopted formation which is a focus of raising the team's overall game. A number of the goals were a product of this, especially the build up through midfield and finish to Sakk's first which went through a series of moves and passes before being laid off unselfishly by Takahashi for Sakk to finish.

When it came to the MVP the nominations were well spread across the entire squad, not creating any clear winner, such was the overall level of the team in this performance. This left the final call to be Captain's choice and highlight a performance showing balance, adaption and perfectly playing the dual roles of a position as the match dictated.

In the current line up for the sake of overall squad balance a few players needed to adopt irregular positions and one of these was Jorge Marenco being asked to take on the high workrate role of wing back. Marenco came on to deliver a perfect level of aggression and awareness to transition the role between attack and defence, cleverly arriving on time and at the right moment to score his goal, as well as being back shut down Zion especially when they attempted to overload the left flank when BEFC had been reduced to 10 men in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Simply, Marenco was always in the right place at the right time showing the impact of not just ability and work-rate but match intelligence, situational awareness and overall positioning in relation to his team mates and the changes in the game and attempts to exploit BEFC by the opposition.

Match awareness is a skill not often brought up but Marenco's performance in this match especially shows it's impact and influence on team performance, as well as deserved personal take home to add to his goal tally. Against Zion FC Jorge Marenco is the Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player.
