Adecco MVP BEFC Lions vs Shane - Daniel Mendelssohn

  • Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player vs Shane FC - Daniel Mendelssohn

Following what felt like an undeserved defeat to Shane FC, Lions were left to reflect on their mistakes and where they could work to improve. Despite the goals, however, it was agreed that if one position had been kept solid throughout the game, it was that in which they had struggled the most in the past: the goalkeeper. It was in the hands of hidden goalkeeping maestro Dan Mendelssohn that Shane found their largest obstacle. When no on else stepped up for the position, and the team in need again, Mendelssohn volunteered himself and in the process convinced many players that he was the revelation of the match, as he played the position with the calmness and agility of a player that has been a goalkeeper for much longer!

In what was a close fought game with Lions having the better chances and hitting the post (again!) a few times, Shane played a strong counter attack with some of their "guest" Div 1 Panthers players doing leading the charge. It was only through an unfortunate cross that slipped through that Shane was able to beat Mendelssohn who had otherwise closed down a few 1 on 1s and stopped the few long shots Shane managed through the wings. With Komatsu directing the attack from the left and Arthur organizing the defence, Lions looked well balanced, and were punished for small mistakes with Shane conveting their chances and after Mark unfortunately conceded the crucial free-kick outside our box which effectively killed the game.

Arthur's strong play and distribution linked well with Witvliet's physical play and Quinn's long passing, however the goals were not to come for Lions in this game, a few shots wide from the sides and an unfortunate side-net from Yong in a one on one, were all that the Lions could take. Captain Viran also broke his toe in a collision with a defender. However, the Lions can take consolation in their strategy, with the midfield proving to be stronger each game and the attack taking a more complex form than punting to the frontmost player.

In what was a bitter defeat, one player stood out: for his amazing reflexes, steady hands and team spirit, the Adecco MVP against Shane goes to Dan Mendelssohn.
